How many tourists are choosing domestic holidays this year? Research on tourists’ traffic in Lublin in 2019-2020.

The holiday season is around the corner. It is the second time when we are going on vacation during the pandemic. We have recently researched tourists' mobility for the city of Lublin. We have compared the tourist traffic in 2019 and 2020. What conclusions can we draw on the expected number of tourists visiting Polish cities this year?

What has the research shown?

Despite the inhibition of group, foreign, and business tourism, many tourists and visitors chose Lublin last year when traveling around Poland. Lublin reports that in 2020, during the holiday season, it had about 450,000 guests, so as many as in previous years. Interestingly, in 2020, probably due to the reduction of foreign trips, visitors decided to stay longer than in 2019.

Does our research confirm these observations? Definitely yes! The data clearly shows that the tourist traffic in Lublin in 2020 decreased by 32% compared to 2019. The number of tourists, i.e., those who spent at least one night in Lublin, decreased from 502,000 up to 340,000, and the number of visitors, so those who are not staying overnight, from 159,000 up to 107,000 people. These declines concerned months in which the restrictions severely limited or even made it impossible to travel, i.e., from March to May and October to December. During the holiday season, the number of tourists and visitors was similar - 60,000 in July and 70,000 in August and September.

In addition, we also noticed changes in the length of stay. Two years ago, tourists most often decided to stay for two days. In 2020, their preferences slightly changed to 3-5 days. Indeed, it is not a huge change, but it clearly fits the national trends of domestic tourists who, due to the uncertain situation of foreign trips, decided to stay in Poland.

This is also confirmed by the data on where the guests came from. These were mainly the remaining parts of the Lubelskie Voivodeship (160,000 people) and Mazowsze (90,000 people). Apart from them, Lublin was also visited by residents of the neighboring provinces: Świętokrzyskie, Podlaskie, and Podkarpackie (approx. 20,000 people), Łódzkie (15,000 people) and southern Poland: Małopolskie, Śląskie and Dolnośląskie (approx. 10,000 people).

What kind of tourist mobility are we expecting for this year?

The current year, despite the restrictions and pandemic, is entirely different from 2020. Above all, the vaccination campaign is gaining momentum, and more and more people are being vaccinated. Additionally, the borders have been opened. If not all of them, and under certain conditions, mobility is much easier anyway. That is why we can expect that length of stay will decrease and that there may be as many visitors as in the years before the pandemic, if not less. These are, of course, only forecasts, but one should be prepared for less interest in Polish destinations among domestic tourists.
