Recently, the world has known that Facebook's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced the renaming of the most popular social networking site. The new name, META, is closely related to the creation of the Metaverse, or virtual reality, by the Facebook group.
Zuckerberg's decision to change the name did not elicit voices of enthusiasm. Many opinions say that these are PR activities that are to solve the recent problems with Facebook application crashes. As a result, they have significantly impacted companies' global level and losses using their advertising services.
It is worth recalling the situation from a few years ago, i.e., changing the name of the most popular Internet search engine. In 2015, Google announced plans to establish a new company called Alphabet Inc. Ultimately; this change aimed to relieve Google from departments dealing with drones or intelligent homes. The restructuring itself did not bring any spectacular effects. Google is still known as Google, and Alphabet has remained a reasonably anonymous name. Does the same thing happen to the Facebook group?
The most exciting aspect mentioned at the conference seems to be the creation of a metaverse. As the CEO describes, each user will have their personalized avatar in this world, which they can use to navigate through virtual or augmented reality. The currently presented prototype of the application does not differ in graphics from the first computer games from the beginning of the 21st century. Still, we know that it will be different.
According to Mark Zuckerberg's assumptions, the META is supposed to be a world that connects people. According to what he says, apps, websites, and social media channels nowadays focus on themselves, not people. But are you sure? So why was Messenger created, among others, by the Facebook corporation?
While Zuckerberg, in his speech, repeatedly emphasized the great importance of man in the whole concept, it was also stated that it would be a new place for the service, production, and distribution industries. So, in short, we will find their products for sale that will appear in the metaverse and their advertisements. It can be a new plane and distribution channel for many companies.
Zuckerberg wants to create a new world in an existing world. However, it is not an investment that people are interested in (the CEO conference itself was watched by only 20,000 people at its peak). The whole concept of Zuckerberg is accompanied by the belief that virtual reality is not needed or we are not ready for it. The project assumes development over the next ten years, so we will have to wait for the final result and the practical experience of the metaverse.
The conference called The Metaverse and How We'll Build It Together - Connect 2021, where all changes to Facebook were announced, is available on YouTube.
Additionally, the first campaign related to all changes in the Facebook group was shown. The film shows the power that metaverse will have and its application in the future.
