Fuel price reductions. 60% increase in visits to petrol stations by foreigners

On February 1, 2022, as a result of the anti-inflationary shield 2.0 and the reduction of the VAT rate from 23% to 8%, a drop in fuel prices in Poland was observed. As a result of measures to counteract the increase in inflation, prices dropped by about 50-60 PLN per litre. Therefore, our agency managed to investigate whether the reduction in fuel prices resulted in more frequent visits to gas stations in the western territories of Poland by German citizens.

Initial data of the research

The period from 01/02/2022 to 06/02/2022 was examined and compared with the last week of January (24/01/2022-31/01/2022). Traffic was observed at gas stations such as: Orlen, Amic, BP, Circle K, Shell, Moya and Lotos. On the Polish side, the following poviats were analyzed: Bolesławiec, Lubański, Zgorzelecki, Gorzowski, Krośnieński, Słubicki, Sulęciński, Żagański, Żarski, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Gryfiński, Myśliborski, Police, Pyrzycki, Szczecin and Świnoujście. Over 200,000 visits by German citizens to petrol stations in Poland were analyzed. 

How many people from abroad have visited petrol stations after the price reduction?

The base value of the index on the first day of the study was 100. The next 4 days was a slight increase in the index to a maximum of 120. In the last three days, we observe a decrease in the number of visits to petrol stations by 30%, where the corresponding values ​​for each day are 80, 97 and 77. The decrease may be caused by the knowledge of German citizens about reductions in fuel prices in Poland or holidays in individual federal states bordering Poland. 1.02. it is the day of introducing price cuts. Thus, an increase was recorded that day, but not exceeding the index on the first day of the survey. The next days to the end of the test period are increases compared to the previous days. The increases are visible from 03.02. The highest index was recorded on February 5, 2022 and amounted to 160.
