The picnic is behind us. This year, the number of Poles leaving has dropped by 30%. We chose the mountains and the sea less often. Where do we most willingly decide to spend the picnic, and why?
A picnic, i.e., a few days off at the beginning of the month, is a perfect opportunity for domestic trips. We spend this time with family and friends, meet at a barbecue, go for walks, enjoy the first rays of the sun. Both a year ago and now, we are in a state of epidemiological threat, so we move less, mainly in Poland.
Interestingly, in 2020, during the national lockdown, over 0.5 million Poles left for another province. This year we are accustomed to the pandemic reality, and it does not paralyze us like a year ago. Nevertheless, we decided to go on holiday away from home much less often.
There were no surprises here. According to our research, we chose the voivodships that have been at the forefront of the most attractive tourism for years.
We analyzed a sample of 542,812 unique users of mobile devices in 2020 and 377,523 in 2021. Both this and the previous year, we spent the picnic most often in the Małopolskie Voivodeship (26.8%). In southern Poland, we also chose Dolnośląskie (17.0%) and Śląskie (12.9%). We traveled to the seaside less often than in 2020, but still in the exact directions - to the Pomeranian (12.9%) and West Pomeranian (12.1%) provinces. The five most decreases were observed in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, by almost 50%. Among the five most popular travel destinations, the declines were visible year on year for each of the analyzed voivodeships.
What influenced the reduced mobility of Poles? The pandemic probably made us return to our hometown. We have smaller budgets, and we are waiting for the restrictions to be reduced during the summer holidays when we can travel abroad.
Changing the epidemiological situation will certainly influence our behavior. Follow our blog, where we will publish the results of next interesting research!
