The Long Night of Museums in Warsaw - data from smartphones allowed to skip the largest queues

The Night of Museums - an annual cultural festival took place throughout Poland last Saturday. This year's edition of the event was unique because for the first time the participants had the opportunity to monitor the status of queues on a regular basis of popular locations related to art, culture and history.

Selectivv carried out monitoring of ten selected places and checking the number of participants in these institutions was possible thanks to the analysis of data from smartphones, using our proprietary Geotrapping® technology.

Location monitoring during the Night of Museums

For the first time, the residents of Warsaw were able to check the number of people staying in the selected ten museums involved in the Long Night of Museums and estimate the waiting time in the queue. The monitoring covered the locations that enjoyed the greatest popularity among the residents of the capital during last year's edition of the event, among others: the National Museum, Royal Łazienki Park and the Warsaw Rising Museum. The statistics were presented on a website specially prepared for this event. The data were updated every 10 minutes.

Copernicus Science Center was the most popular among the locations analyzed by Selectivv. At the peak of interest, at 5:20 p.m., there were more than 2.500 people queuing up there. Another location enjoying great interest was Royal Łazienki Park where at 8:00 p.m. there were nearly 1.8 thousand people. Real night owls left this place after 4:00 a.m. In the queue to the Warsaw Rising Museum the largest number of visitors, over 1.700 people, set up at 1:30 p.m. A similar number of people were waiting to enter the National Museum around 4:30 p.m.

Who were the participants of the Night of Museums?

The locations analyzed by Selectivv were most willingly visited by people aged 31-35. This age group accounted for nearly 21% of all participants of the Long Night of Museums. Mainly people aged 31-40 (39,6%) queued up waiting to enter Copernicus Science Center. Women (54%) were prevailed among the visitors. The Warsaw Rising Museum attracted more people in the age of 31-35 as well as 35-40 (respectively 18,9% and 18,2%), while people aged 36-45 were in the queue to get in the National Museum (18, 2%). In both museums, the majority were men (about 52%). Moreover, more than 4% of foreigners decided to learn Polish culture and art. The most frequently visited locations were the Warsaw Rising Museum, in which they constituted 6,8% of visitors, Copernicus Science Center (6,2%) and the National Museum (5,2%).

Due to the great interest in the described event, Selectivv does not exclude the possibility of monitoring more places in the upcoming Night of Museums, not only in the capital, but also in other cities of Poland.
